A theme for A Rose for Emily is gossip. The reason this is a theme is because during Emily's funeral the whole town was gossiping. Anytime Emily did something people gossiped about it behind her back. Some examples are when Emily started dating Homer Barron they gossiped about how he was beneath her because he was a day labor. Also they gossiped about why he didn't marry her. They were saying that he was gay or that he liked to party. They also gossiped about how Emilys father was the only man in her life because he ran all the boys away.
A symbol for A Rose for Emily is A rose which symbolizes love. Emilys love for Homer is an example of this symbol. Another symbol was black which symbolizes death. The death of Emily, her father, colonel, and Homer is an example. When Emily wears black it symbolizes death and rat poisoning.
